Do the Right Thing

A third grader donates her hair to a program for children who have lost their hair while undergoing chemotherapy.

A high school freshman befriends a child with Down's Syndrome and becomes a peer mentor and friend.

A middle schooler keeps a positive and upbeat attitude despite a severe disability.

A high schooler volunteers at a camp for handicapped children.

Those stories may not make the local news, but they are the real life deeds of Jacksonville students named in an innovative program called "Do the Right Thing" which recognizes students who do just that - the right thing.

The program allows teachers and police officers to nominate children who are role models for others. It is sponsored by Prudential Financial, in partnership with the Jewish Community Alliance, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the Duval County Schools.

"This is an opportunity for our city to recognize youth who are making good decisions," Sheriff Nat Glover said. "Too often we hear discouraging stories about young people who are troubled and stray from the right path," the Sheriff added.

"Do the Right Thing is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on kids who are committed to make our community a better place - whether they are saving a life or simply bringing joy to the lives of others," Glover said.

The Do the Right Thing ceremony will be at 1:00 p.m., April 21, at the Times-Union Performing Arts Center, 300 Water Street.
