Greetings from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office,
Thanks for taking the time to connect with us via the Internet. Important changes are taking place in this police department. We are emphasizing community policing, making law enforcement more pro-active, more efficient and more effective.
After taking the oath of office in 1995, I went to work on a complete reorganization, putting more police officers on the street and reducing the administrative cost of the department.
We established partnerships of citizens and police.
There was a time when the police said: "Law enforcement is our job. Let us do it." And citizens said: "Law enforcement is your job. You do it." But now we know it takes a partnership of citizens and police. We are building that partnership in a number of ways.
Sheriff's Advisory Councils -- 17 or them -- help us keep in touch with every neighborhood in the city.
Stop Stations -- 51 of them -- will increase the police presence in many communities. These are storefront offices for our police officers to do paperwork, meet with citizens, use the telephone, etc.
Names of officers are on their cars, another step to help us connect with citizens.
Also, I am keeping my promise to walk every beat in the city every year, giving me an opportunity to make direct contact with citizens.
Of course the Internet gives us yet another means of staying in touch. We welcome your suggestions and comments. Also, we invite you to watch our weekly cable television show, Signal 94.
