Sept. 17, 1997
Pull over safely when you see an emergency vehicle coming.
That's the message of a public safety campaign announced today by Mayor John Delaney and Sheriff Nat Glover.
It is the YES campaign (Yield to Emergency Services), which will include public service announcements on television and radio, bumper stickers and billboards.
Sheriff Glover and Mayor Delaney announced the campaign today at a news conference at the Northeast Florida Safety Council. They handed out bumper stickers, displayed a small version of the YES billboard, and previewed the television PSA.
The YES campaign was one of the recommendations of a blue ribbon committee appointed by the sheriff. The committee said some drivers fail to pull over safely for emergency vehicles -- fire and rescue, police and private ambulances.
The campaign is supported by a contribution from Jerry Hamm, the Chevrolet dealer, and donated services from Universal Outdoor Inc., the billboard company.
